UPDATE: Two teens arrested after student injured in after-school stabbing at PCI
UPDATE: Portage la Prairie RCMP have arrested two teenagers following a stabbing outside Portage Collegiate Institute on Thursday. Shortly before 4 p.m., officers were dispatched to the PCI parking lot, where a confrontation had escalated into violence. A 15-year-old male student was stabbed during the incident and immediately received first aid from school staff before being transported by EMS to the hospital. He is in stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery. The investigation determined that the altercation involved two other male teens, one of whom was known to the victim. The suspects initially fled the scene on foot. RCMP, assisted by Manitoba RCMP Police Dog Services, conducted extensive searches in the area. Both suspects, aged 14, were located at a residence in Portage la Prairie around 4:40 p.m. and arrested without incident. Following their arrest, the temporary Hold and Secure placed on in-town schools was lifted. googletag.cmd.push(function() { if($(document).width()<900) { s = googletag.defineSlot('/50748803/pol-all-bigbox', [300, 250], 'div-gpt-1647631135332-bbm1'); s.setTargeting('URL', [window.location.pathname]); s.setTargeting('position', [1647631135332]) s.addService(googletag.pubads()); googletag.pubads().refresh([s], {changeCorrelator: false}); } }); The two youths have been charged with aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a weapon for dangerous purposes, resisting or obstructing a peace officer, and disguising themselves with intent to commit an offence. One of the teens was also charged with failing to comply with a release order. Both were held until their scheduled court appearance on Friday. Previous story: The Portage la Prairie School Division (PLPSD) says one student was injured in a stabbing outside Portage Collegiate Institute on Thursday, prompting a brief Hold and Secure at several city schools. The incident happened shortly after dismissal on December 4 in PCI’s student parking lot, where division officials say a confrontation involving a small group of students escalated into violence. One student was stabbed during the altercation. googletag.cmd.push(function() { if($(document).width()<900) { s = googletag.defineSlot('/50748803/pol-all-bigbox', [300, 250], 'div-gpt-1647631135332-bbm2'); s.setTargeting('URL', [window.location.pathname]); s.setTargeting('position', [1647631135332]) s.addService(googletag.pubads()); googletag.pubads().refresh([s], {changeCorrelator: false}); } }); According to the division, the injured student immediately ran to the north doors of the school, where a staff member was monitoring the exit. School staff provided first aid and contacted 911 while keeping the student safe inside the controlled-access entrance. EMS crews transported the youth to the hospital. As officers searched for suspects, the RCMP advised PLPSD to place all in-town schools into a temporary Hold and Secure, preventing students involved in extracurricular activities from leaving the buildings and entering the active police area. Several students voluntarily provided information to police, aiding the investigation. The Hold and Secure was lifted shortly after 5 p.m., once the suspects were taken into custody. In a statement, Superintendent Pamela Garnham praised the quick actions of PCI staff, first responders, and the division’s RCMP Liaison Officer, Constable Robert Smith, who arrived within minutes to provide real-time updates. googletag.cmd.push(function() { if($(document).width()<900) { s = googletag.defineSlot('/50748803/pol-all-bigbox', [300, 250], 'div-gpt-1647631135332-bbm3'); s.setTargeting('URL', [window.location.pathname]); s.setTargeting('position', [1647631135332]) s.addService(googletag.pubads()); googletag.pubads().refresh([s], {changeCorrelator: false}); } }); “We want to assure all families and staff that the safety of our schools remains a top priority, and we will work with our school community to provide the resources and support that are needed at this time. We recognize that the incident yesterday at PCI is concerning. We want to stress that our schools are safe, and we are dedicated to maintaining a secure learning environment for all students and staff,” Garnham says. PLPSD added that it is reviewing the event closely and considering whether any additional safety measures are needed across the division. Crisis response staff and counsellors are available today to support students and staff.
